Volunteer - Mobile Information van driver.

About the opportunity

Join us by investing your time in doing something that makes a world of difference to people with sight loss. The Mobile Information Van serves as a vehicle to deliver information and demonstrate aids to visually impaired people, their friends and Carers. You will drive the Mobile Information Van to various locations around the county to provide information on all aspects of visual impairment, including benefits, leisure pursuits and local services, to name but a few. You can give as much time as you want to suit you.

Sight Support Derbyshire exists to enhance the quality of life for visually impaired people by raising the resources necessary to provide a comprehensive range of supportive services and activities throughout Derbyshire.

What are they looking for?

What you will do:
• You will drive the Mobile Information Van to specific locations in the county, set up and supervise a stand of equipment and leaflets, take part in various events to provide information and advice to visually impaired people. you may be asked to demonstrate aids or equipment.
• The vehicle is stored in West Hallam and drivers will need to be able to transport themselves to this location to pick up

Skills you will need to have: A current driving licence is essential, good communication skills, able to demonstrate and explain use of equipment, have a good knowledge of Derbyshire, and have ability to work as a team.

Training and Support: We will give you visual impairment training and specific training of all the tasks. You will only go out on your own after your training and assessment. A member of staff will give you support throughout your training and will meet with you on a regular basis to see how things are going.


Practical Considerations

Volunteers must have a driving licence, Insurance requires volunteers to be over the age of 25. With own transport to enable pick up of vehicle.
Presentable with good communication skills.
Volunteers will need good mobility (To move presentation materials, and in order to when required safely guide persons who may have visual impairment).
Expenses: We will reimburse your out of pocket expenses in line with our expenses policy.

Before you start: You will need to provide us with the names of two people who can give us a character reference for you
